Three miles… doesn’t seem like a lot. Three miles or 5 kilometers depending on which unit of measure you prefer.
Today I got out and went to the local bike path and I walked 3 miles for Sgt Rachel McKay. It took me an hour to do the three miles. It wasn’t easy given the 80-degree heat, and the fact it’s really the first physical activity that I have done since having COVID. I chose Rachel because she was local, a resident of Marblehead MA. I wanted to honor someone local… Someone that, if things were different, I might have come across.
There was something both inspiring, and emotionally taxing walking that trail with the picture of a fallen hero. There was no way I was going to quit, there was no way I was going to cut the event short while I was carrying her with me.
" McKAY, Sgt. Rachel Reve Age 23, of Marblehead, MA passed away unexpectedly on April 8, 2019 at the United States Army’s Fort Gordon located in Augusta, GA. "

I walked for her in support of the charity group 22 Too Many.
It’s a sad fact that we lose an average of 22 veterans to Suicide every day in America. We lose more veterans to Suicide than we do in combat. And this is not just an American thing, while the numbers are different the issue is the same in the UK and Australia as well. Veterans suffer the invisible wounds that do not heal long after their deployments end.
Rachel: Thank you for your service.
